Outstanding BlueSkyian (22)

Here comes another Outstanding BlueSkyian named Phyu Sin Hmwe who has achieved an IELTS score of 8.0 on her IELTS test taken in May 2022. Phyu Sin started joining our individual/ private coaching after the completion of her matriculation exam in 2020, and she has studied with the Blue Sky International over the past two years. Her deliberate and strategic efforts made over the years have paid off, and she could now hit an IELTS band score of 8.0! Big congratulations, Phyu Sin.

The following are the tips shared by Phyu Sin for those of you who are preparing for an IELTS test.

Listening Tips

First of all, it is best to push yourself a little more when you practice. For example, I skipped all the pauses whenever I did practice tests. Also, when you read the questions, just try to grasp the general idea of the answer you might have to put in instead of reading every single word. This makes it easier to pay attention to the important parts of the audio. Especially, in multiple questions, their speeches mostly brush over all the available choices. Thus, it’s essential to not lose focus of the final conclusion because this is the correct answer.

Outside of class, if you enjoy watching movies or listening to music, it is great to try guessing the words without looking at the lyrics and subtitles. It helps a lot when you practice English with something you actually enjoy doing.

Reading Tips

In the test, I go through three steps. Firstly, I scan the whole passage to understand the overall idea of each paragraph. This technique helps a lot when you have to choose appropriate titles for the paragraphs. After that, I look at the questions and look for the paragraph related to it. Finally, I search for the sentences or phrases that give the answer.

For the True/False/Not Given questions, it is easy to get confused while choosing False and Not Given. At this time, remember to read the corresponding part a little more. It will get clearer eventually. If you can’t still decide, it is okay to just make a guess and move on.

For me, I like reading novels and short stories in the first place. Although it’s not academic, it really improves my reading speed. Hence, if you also like it, then go for it.

Writing Tips

There is usually a structure for both Task 1 and 2. In the Task 2, for instance, it is important to not get confused between opinion and idea essays. You will also need to read some up-to-date news and academic papers to have enough knowledge when similar topics come up on the test. In the Task 1, you will need to know a lot of synonyms to rephrase the questions. There will also be a need to switch around adjectives and adverbs as well. All of this can, indeed, be done by reading a lot of Band 9 sample answers and practicing your writing.

Speaking Tips

For this, you will need to have a great number of lexical resources. You can also learn from previous recorded tests. Then, you can apply what you learnt when you try speaking with a partner. For this case, it is great to have as much practice as you can. During the test, do not rush. It is best to speak calmly and be mindful of your words and grammar.
