We would like to introduce you to one of our Outstanding BlueSkyians – Htet Hsu Yati who has recently achieved an IELTS band score of 7 on her first attempt. To prepare for the test, she joined both IELTS foundation and preparation online classes over the past few months. We are so delighted to learn that she could hit a score higher than she had expected. Her targetted score was a 6 as it’s required for her university application. Now that she has hit a band score of 7, we are more than happy, impressed by her efforts and proud of her achievement. Big congratulations to our dear Htet Hsu!

*The following are the tips shared by Htet Hsu for those of you who are preparing to take an IELTS test.
Listening Tips
For listening, practice as much as possible and you’ll find out more and more differences between our accent and the British one. Listening may entail extra focus and quick skimming skills so that it is unlikely to miss out on the answer. I hit a score of 8 on listening thanks to Ted Talks that teachers recommended and before I fell asleep at night, I paid attention to them when my earphones were plugged on.
*Reading Tips
Skimming and scanning are the two skills that you need to gain mastery over in reading. I suggest reading questions in the first place, otherwise, it may consume a lot of time by reading the whole passage. The answer tends to be located near the synonyms and hence, please give so much importance to them. It would be better to practice the types of questions that you are weak at, for instance, Matching Headings used to be the most challenging one for me.
*Writing Tips
From my first-hand experience, it is beneficial for me to read essays from examiners as well as online resources such as ieltsmentor.com and ieltsadvantage.com, at least 2 a day. DO NOT copy ideas or sentences from written essays and only take notes of good words. Try to write one task 1 or 2 every other day with timing, if you don’t finish within the limited time, it’s better off writing it again.
I opine that the most important thing for writing task 2 would be having a logical flow since you won’t obtain high marks unless the examiner finds your essay easy to follow. Another thing is to make self-reflections of your work after writing an essay.
*Speaking Tips
Examiners may be impressed as long as we can speak naturally, for example, a conversation combined with idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs. I believe that practice matters if we wish to get familiar with the majority of topics in all 3 parts of speaking. Therefore, pick up a speaking partner who would be able to practice in the long term with you. Speaking with others may also allow you to come up with innovative ideas.
*Benefits of Having a Speaking Partner
Having paired up with a good study partner who was recommended by Teacher Wendy @ Hla Win May Oo, I realized how much it was advantageous. Honestly, my study partner was the one who helped me not to go astray from the right track since she kept reminding me to study together every morning and evening. She also pointed out my inaccuracies, regarding speaking and writing and we gave feedback to each other’s work in order to reflect upon our mistakes. Both of us held the same opinion; hard work and commitment will pay off after all.

Our big congratulations to Htet Hsu on achieving a good score of IELTS on her first attempt! We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
