Outstanding BlueSkyian (18)

Here comes another Outstanding BlueSkyian, Yoon Kyi Phyu, who has achieved an IELTS band score of 7. She has been joining our online Cambridge English and IELTS classes since June 2021. After 4 months of preparation, she did her IELTS test and achieved a score of 7.

Even after achieving this IELTS score of 7, Yoon keeps on joining the B2 classes (Cambridge English | FCE). She will move up to the C1 level (Cambridge English | CAE) class, upon the completion of ten FCE coursebooks (duration: total 300 hours of classwork or guided learning and another 200 hours of self-study or homework). We so happy to have such responsive, responsible, sweet and smart students like her in our class. Big congratulations, dear Yoon, on achieving a good score of band 7 on your first attempt.

The following are some IELTS tips from her.

Self-introduction

Hello everyone! This is Yoon Kyi Phyu, who has graduated from high school in 2020 with 5 distinctions, achieving a total of 514 marks. I’m currently in search of educational pathways to study abroad. I’ve always wanted to be a doctor and finding my way to be one. Apart from study, I’ve been playing badminton for almost 6 years and love to try out every type of sport.

Listening Tips

I’d say this is the easiest and most comfortable part in the whole IELTS test. However, this session requires a great deal of practice. Do read the word limits for your answer before answering the questions and be careful with spellings and capitalization as well. Besides, if you miss an answer to a particular question, just leave it because minding it would be the biggest distraction for the following ones. Moreover, what’s crucial in the listening test is to never lose your focus on the test or you will regret it by thinking that you would have gotten that score.

During my IELTS journey, there was a time when I was stuck at a certain band score and could not achieve beyond it no matter how much I tried. However, thanks to the BSI teachers, I got to know a way to improve my listening skill and it was “doing reflection” on the mistakes I made. Reflection seems less important when compared to other methods but it did boost my score immediately.

Reading Tips

Regarding reading, I suggest you not spend time reading every detail about the passage due to the time constraint. Observe the questions first before you answer them because it helps to find the solutions more quickly. Furthermore, make sure to get used to different questions types. In multiple choice sessions, if you struggle choosing the correct answer, get rid of those which are impossible. Finally, it is also essential to fully understand the ways to approach each type of questions because practising without knowing the techniques would result in a waste of energy and time. For this part, it was not necessary for me to research the methods since the teachers carefully taught us how to tackle a particular type of questions in class.

Writing Tips

In writing, reading the sample answer is extremely important since you cannot generate innovative ideas and impressive wordings unless you have enough exposure to them. In addition, showing off your wide grammatical range is also important but don’t make the sentences too complicated.  Moreover, don’t forget to give examples, use appropriate linkers and adverbs. For me, it was not very difficult to explore the grammar patterns because I get to regularly sharpen my grammar skills in the FCE class.  Last but not least, avoid word repetition by using synonyms and try to compose your essay with a great choice of words.

Speaking Tips

Most students think that this session is easy and effortless but actually it’s not. You need to include advanced grammar and vocabulary, linkers, complex structures and synonymous expressions. Moreover, it is also essential to have a perfect timing for each question. I recommend you to learn new vocabulary every day and explore the ideal answers in the speaking test. Although it is fine to practice speaking alone, it is better to have a partner. In class, we usually have 2 rounds of practice with different classmates and it helps me to gain confidence and bravery to talk with the examiner in the test. More importantly, teachers normally ask us what our most favourite word in our partner’s speech was, so we have to give full attention to the other and in this way I learnt different types of speaking styles and choice of words.

You can learn the structure of speaking in the ieltsdragon.com website, and watch how other students tackle the questions on the IELTS daily channel. There are many other incredible websites and channels to learn, so choose what suits your taste.

Overall Tips

Practice is the most essential and crucial part in the IELTS exam. The more you practise, the more experience you will attain. In that way, you will understand how to approach a particular question. In my IELTS journey, I make sure to include practising all the skills in my daily routine. It was very stressful to finish everything in a day but it will definitely pay off. Reflection is also necessary to be made after every practice in every skill because it helps to boost your score in a short period of time. Lastly, dedication and determination are the keys to hit your targeted score or even beyond it. So don’t give up and good luck with your exam.

Thanks to BSI

Because of the BSI teachers, especially Tr. Wendy @ Hla Win May Oo, I’ve learnt not only academic lessons but also other life lessons and ways to upgrade myself. I got to realise the importance of creating a better version of myself every day and to set goals in everything I do. In class, my teacher once said that accomplishing the daily goals is really essential and she has around 20 daily goals (I don’t remember exactly) and she makes sure to finish them in time. After knowing that, I started to spend my days in a more valuable way. Furthermore, the teachers at BSI are so friendly and kind that I do not have any pressure or tension while attending classes and can learn the lessons in a more comfortable way.
